Losing Our Religion

A former megachurch pastor leaves religion behind to rid himself of the exclusivity created by its dogmas in order to open himself up to learn from the lives, stories, and experiences of everyone else. To prove we are more alike than we think and we can all get along no matter what we believe. Topics range via guest's experiences growing up in religious homes, where Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Secularism, Judaism, Hinduism, Tao, Heathenism, Satanism, Wicca and all forms of dogmas and ideologies programmed into the mind of a child. What happens when that child becomes an adult? What good things do they hold onto? What things do they lose? Where are they now, and in what ways are they finding the peace that we all desire, with or apart from the religions they were raised with? Losing Our Religion is a wild ride with a community of diverse humans each seeking their desired life away from dogma and exclusivity.

Losing Our Religion is a hilarious and candid look at religion and culture, with former pastor, now commune living lover of sinners, Zac Gandara.  As he has drinks with former religious freaks, and others he used to shun.  Gays, Anarchists, Queers, Atheists, Transsexuals, Punk Rockers, and the rest of us that are considered rejects on this island of misfit toys.

IT'S TIME FOR US TO START LISTENING TO MILLENNIALS!

I (Zac) am a GenXer, and I'm tired of people shitting on Millennials. When I was young, they called us "lazy idealists," today I heard us called the "Middle Child Generation. Now their calling Millennials all sorts of things. Well, I think it's time to sit down and learn from Millennials. Braden and I talk about religion, politics, education, social change and more.

A few weeks ago I was invited to speak at a Christian Outreach Ministry and be a guest on their podcast. The topic they asked me to address? Evangelicalism Vs Jesus. I was nervous, but excited to again be talking with "Christians." The talk went great, and the interview was really encouraging. But the podcast never posted, and upon further review of what I shared, the "powers that be" decided it was too controversial to post.

Well, we got a hold of the recording and decided to post it for you to listen too. Decide for yourself.

In this episode, we dive into Rejyna’s Christianity.  As well as her Trans* journey.  One of the beautiful things about this episode is how fluid the conversation goes from storytelling to questioning, to explanation, to reflective open-ended free thought about life, religion, and being free from boxes of expectation and relationship.

In just a few seconds into this conversation, you're going to understand why I hit it off and fell in love with Rejyna.  Her infectious voice, joyful embrace, solid wisdom, and experience, especially in the music industry made this into a roller coaster ride of conversational beauty.

She's a long time talented musician, entertainment industry professional, Christian, Parent, and Trans*.  But those are just labels, and labels do little but limit our experience of the person.  She loves neuroscience, and we get into a great discussion around staying mentally fresh and never aging.

We jump right back into it with Grace continuing her story of what it was like letting her Christian friends know about her relationship with Dave, the baby eating Atheist.

What’s so beautiful about their story is how their differing beliefs created a safe space for them to each ask the hard questions of each other and not only compromise but grow together.

Dave and Grace end the show with some amazing advice and helpful experiences for other Atheists, Muslims, Christians, or Heathens (insert ideological difference here) that may be engaging and pursuing a relationship with someone outside of their religion.

A man loves a woman, so an Atheist marries a Christian. Grace (a Christian) meets Dave (an Atheist), they work through their differences, become friends, fall in love, and get married. Is that allowed? Does it matter? How did they do it? What about their families?

One evening in Whittier California, Dave and Grace had me over for dinner and drinks at their place to talk about their relationship, marriage, and story of joining despite their different beliefs.

Dave and I get into logic, and I keep cutting off Grace before she speaks. But don't worry, we stop pontificating she chimes in and tells the story her way and with beautiful transparency and candor, just as someone with the name is Grace should.

Patrick and I engage in a revealing and transparent conversation about our personal struggles of growth in our lives, our marriages, and how we’re engaging the non-work work of embracing our emotions, feelings, pasts, pains and doing that together with our spouses moving toward the future.

Patrick is also working through coming to the end of his soccer career and answering the hard questions like, What do I do now? What do I want to do with my life? All the while I am still coming through leaving the pastorship and finding my way in life through this podcast.

Patrick Ianni is married with two kids, a NCAA All-American, U.S. Olympian and Major League Soccer standout. But what makes him wonderful to us is his humility, his embracing of his own humanity, and his willingness to share his life so transparently for those that will listen to these episodes with him.

This is a timely episode as we move through the political changes of a “Trump America.” How do we deal with the pain, suffering, and triggering others cause us? That we cause ourselves? Can we remain healthy in such a violent and volatile space? If so, how?

Patrick shares his story with beautiful openness and transparency. His hilarious and traumatic stories of healing from religion, family, coaches, bosses are common to us all. What’s the key factor in us learning, growing, forgiving, and moving through trauma in our lives?

This episode holds a great key for how Patrick is growing through his own human experience. I am so grateful he shared because it helped me tremendously.

This continuation of Ron's story reminds us that it is ok to be angry.  In fact, it's downright therapeutic.  Anger is an emotion that helps us relieve stress, gives us the motivation to solve problems and provides a way, through healthy expression, to discuss our negative feelings.  Religion often forces us to stuff emotions like anger.  It's time to let it out.

Ron Smith is a 6'8" pleasure to be around. We converse around punk rock, spiritual abuse, abuse, atheism, agnosticism, Catholicism, being bitter and angry, and finding joy in our now, lives of liberality.

Ron was born and raised on the Indianapolis' east side to an interesting kind of Christian home. My father was a working class Immanuel Kant, and my mother a sharp-tongued Voltaire who was, and still is, cynical towards organized religion.

After years of wandering around the country, Ron finally finished school earning his degree in Literature and Religion; and met his soul sister, Jack Kerouac. Ron defines himself as a religious seeker who dances between Zen Buddhism and Catholicism, but, at the moment, identifies as a liberal Catholic; and quite fortunate to find an inclusive Catholic Church on Indy's northwest side. Currently, he's doing the work thing, reading, and writing for himself and a friend who has an independent local magazine.

On a side note, the way he goes at organized religion, people have assumed he's an atheist. Something we can relate on.
